Applyo Jena GmbH

Applyo develops and produces lyophilised reagents for in-vitro diagnostics and life science research. The core product is the Lyo-Beads, spherical lyophilisates containing all the necessary enzymes and reagents for a detection reaction – ready-mixed, portioned and immediately soluble and applicable. Depending on the application, the beads can be sized in different sizes for individual reactions or produced as a concentrated master mix for many reactions. The reagents in the Lyo beads are stable for up to 3 years when stored at room temperature.

In addition to customised formulation and process optimisation for freeze-drying the reagent beads, we develop for our partners the molecular biological assays based on PCR, isothermal amplification technologies (RPA, NEAR, LAMP or NASBA) as well as immunological assays.

Dynamic42 GmbH

Dynamic42 GmbH was founded in the spring of 2018 in the high-tech city of Jena and is currently located at the BioInstrumentezentrum on the Beutenberg. The still young company is a spin-off of the University Hospital Jena. We develop and market novel, three-dimensional, human organ models (so-called organ-on-chip technology) for preclinical research and development as well as for testing novel pharmaceutical products, chemicals and food additives.

Dynamic42 GmbH has specialized in the area of organ-on-chip technology in the integration of the immune system, which plays a significant role in the occurence of adverse effects of drugs and has been neglected in the industry and in two-dimensional test systems. Our platform enables toxicity screenings and ADMET studies already in preclinical phases on complex microphysiological models of human organs. Hereby we accompany commercial manufacturers as well as scientists in the field of research and development in the design and execution of preclinical studies.

In addition, we develop human disease models in our chip platform both internally and with external partners – especially in areas where there are no animal models.

Leibniz Institute for Natural Product Research and Infection Biology – Hans Knöll Institute (HKI)

Natural product mediators of biological communication are essential for life. They are involved in the formation of many infectious diseases and are amongst the most important sources for clinical drugs, in particular antibiotics. At the Hans Knöll Institute, Natural Product Research and Infection Biology are closely linked. The scientists at the HKI want to elucidate how microorganisms produce, on the one hand, virulence factors, and on the other, pharmacologically relevant substances. They are interested in the communication between microorganisms such as bacteria and fungi, but also the interaction of pathogenic microorganisms - especially of fungi - with their host. New natural products from microorganisms are tested for their efficacy against infections; these results are used to chemically modify the natural products in a directed manner. Furthermore, strategies used by microorganisms to overcome the immune system will be investigated. These studies lay the groundwork for the future development of new diagnostics and intervention strategies, which are required urgently to fight soaring fungal infections and antibiotic resistance. This application-orientated fundamental research will advance the development of new natural product-based treatments.

Nanozoo GmbH

Nanozoo offers services for sequence-based questions. For this, the team provides end-to-end analyses to automate the data-intensive biology from sample to report for the customer. Instead of cultures and microscopes, the start-up relies on data and code to provide better insight into the microbial world. To do this, it uses established algorithms, but also develops its own methods for bioinformatics analysis based on artificial intelligence. Nanozoo also specialises in curating extensive databases of microbial genomes and their phenotypes, comprising hundreds of thousands of data sets.

Nanozoo offers the following services:

  • Genome reconstruction of pathogens
  • Outbreak tracking
  • Metagenome and microbiome analyses

oncgnostics GmbH

On the basis of patented epignetic markers, oncgnostics is developing highly reliable molecularbiological tests for early diagnosis, therapeutic decisions and aftercare in cancer diagnosis.Problem

  • Many cancers are still being discovered too late through a lack of unified markers and tests.
  • In the early diagnosis of cervical cancer the cytologic Pap-test on swabs is still the most common method ( 17m tests p.a.). Since its value depends strongly on subjective factors, over half of all women with diseases will be overlooked.
  • Tests on the cervical cancer-triggering papillomia virus (HPV) will mostly only be used in the clarification of more conspicuous Pap-smears. (0.8m tests p.a.) Their negative predictive value is high - women who are not contagious have no ailments. But: clinically relevant preliminary stages, or even cervical cancer, are only present in 10-15% of all HPV-positive women. Therefore a test system with a clear result for cancer as well as with correlated preliminary stages is urgently needed.

Solution

  • Epigenetic, based on DNA methylation molecular markers. DNA methylation constitutes a natural DNA chemical modification, which can cause mutation of genes, for example. Tumour tissue indicates specific DNA methylation partners are available for diagnosis.
  • oncgnostics has validated a set of markers for cervical cancer by means of best characterised, clinically relevant patient material. The subsequent test, GynTect® provides a reliable assessment, which requires invasive diagnosis and treatment for HPV-infected women.

SmartDyeLivery GmbH

SmartDyeLivery develops and commercialises a patent-pending unique technology platform for the cell-type- and tissue-specific delivery of active pharmaceutical ingredients (API) on the basis of functionalised nanoparticles. Due to its targeted delivery and controlled release in the target tissue this universal platform technology enables a systemic administration of highly potent API’s. Thus, also reduced dosages leading to sufficient tissue levels.
This approach has the potential to significantly improve the spectrum of side effects of administered API’s. The unique strategy of functionalisation of nanoparticles with dyes also enables a combined approach of therapy and diagnostics in a so called theranostic concept.

As first core application the team of SmartDyeLivery focusses on the clinical picture of septic cholestasis, a sepsis based organ dysfunction of the liver associated with a very high mortality rate.

Beside this first core application and based on the modular principle of the SmartDyeLivery-technology, it can be also used for additional fields of applications. Functionalisation with different molecules enables specific targeting of various tissues, different cargos allow approaches in additional therapeutic areas. Moreover, the polymer-based nanoparticles can be adapted in size and release kinetics to the specific question.
