The development of a sample bank with corresponding detailed clinical data on diagnosis, comorbidities, immune status, treatment and the progression of patients with and without pneumonia is essential for clinical as well as basic research and the preparation and validation of diagnostic tests. A prerequisite is standarised sample management and handling that is organised by way of a centralised biobank and subject to a comprehensive quality control process - from preanalytics to sample preparation, aliquoting, storage and distribution.

Thus, the aim of the subproject is the collection of a numerous different sample qualities within a strictly quality controlled sample management programme at the highest qualitative level. Samples from clinically well-characterised subjects should be obtained, stored and made available under maximum standardised and quality-controlled conditions for later InfectoGnostics research. For this purpose, the existing infrastructure in the University Hospital Jena will use the DIN EN ISO 9001:2008-certified Integrated Biobank Jena to ensure that the samples are handled under the highest quality standards and in strict compliance with data protection laws (generic data protection concept of the TMF for biobanks, www.tmf-ev.de) and the applicable ethical and legal framework. In addition to the specific adaptation of existing certified workflows for InfectoGnostics, an expansion of the existing, but currently limited possibility for fully automated storage of samples at -80 ° C is also planned for the project. In addition, isolated pathogens will be stored in order to build a pathogen biobank IG to facilitate the future exploration of e.g. host-pathogen interactions, the spread of pathogens and resistance, strategies for preventing unsuccessful therapies or the monitoring of treatment effectiveness.
