DiagnosTech Lecture: Fingerprinting the Superbug

Staphylococcus aureus is an abundant and extremely versatile bacterium. It either colonizes or infects 20-30% of any given human population. It can also be found in a wide range of wild or domestic animals. S. aureus asymptomatically colonizes its hosts, but it also can cause a wide variety of clinically relevant and sometimes fatal infections.

In recent years, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) has become a global challenge because it is resistant to the most commonly used antibiotics. Novel strains and particularly virulent clones have also emerged in populations and livestock.

In this DiagnosTech Lecture, Stefan Monecke will present comprehensive results of studies derived from an international isolate collection and investigation via DNA microarrays and partly NGS over the last 12 years. Multinational outbreaks and the reasons for them could thus be identified and measures to better control this infectious event could be recommended.
